Can supplements reverse greying hair?
As seen in GB News
Clinicbe founder Dr Barbara Kubicka provided expert advice about the issue of ageing and hair colour for GB News. Loss of hair colour is one of the commonly understood marks of the ageing process. The first white hair can be a shock, but as more emerge, women and men typically face a choice of whether to colour their hair or 'go grey gracefully'. Hair turning grey as we age is all about pigment. The colour of your hair comes from melanin, produced by cells called melanocytes in the hair follicle. Over time, these melanocytes either decrease in number or slow down on melanin production. Less melanin means less colour, and eventually, hair loses its pigment and becomes colourless, so it appears grey or white. The timing of turning grey can vary. Some hold onto natural hair colour into their 50s/60s or even later, while others go grey or white in their 20s. It's an individual experience which is thought to depend largely on genes and ethnicity, although stress and illness can cause earlier greying.
Copper deficiency and hair colour
Now researchers have identified another issue and it may be one that you can do something about. Copper deficiency has been linked to earlier loss of hair colour and there is scientific evidence to suggest that supplementation may help to delay or prevent the process. GB News asked skin, hair and wellbeing expert Dr Barbara Kubicka MD for her medical opinion:
"Copper gluconate plays a crucial role in regulating melanin production, potentially preventing premature grey hair for individuals with copper deficiency. "However, it’s essential to note that its effectiveness varies from person to person. "Before considering supplements, it’s advisable to assess your copper levels, perhaps through methods like an OligoScan, to determine if you would benefit from copper supplementation."
