Commerce Ministry To Come Up With An Advanced Version Of The GeM Portal

A one-stop website called Government e-Marketplace (GeM) makes it easy for different government departments, organizations, and PSUs to purchase common goods and services online. GeM seeks to increase the speed, efficiency, and openness of public procurement. To help government users get the most for their money, it offers e-bidding, reverse e-auction, and demand aggregation technologies.

The GeM portal may be used for procurement by all Central and State Government Ministries and Departments, as well as their affiliated or subordinate offices, Central and State Autonomous Bodies, Central and State Public Sector Units, local governments, etc.

By updating the platform’s current software, the ministry of commerce will create a more dynamic Government e Marketplace (GeM) portal for use in public procurement.

According to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the current program will be rewritten, and the project may take more than a year to complete. The development of the advanced version of the portal would begin in January of the next year and last around 16 to 17 months.

The portal was introduced in August 2016 to allow all central government ministries and departments to make purchases of products and services online.

So far this fiscal year, GeM has been purchased for more than Rs 1.11 lakh crore. Authorities expressed their optimism that by the conclusion of this fiscal year, the number would reach Rs 2 lakh crore.

Standardized and enhanced catalog management, a strong search engine, real-time pricing comparison, template-based bid, demand aggregation, user rating, and analytics are all features of GeM 3.0.

GeM’sthird edition has been scaled up to keep up with the constantly changing technological challenges and stakeholder objectives.

To prepare merchants and service providers for the switch from GeM 2.0 to the scaled-up version of the site, a national sellers onboarding campaign has been initiated.

The site currently has 72,941 vendors and service providers registered to sell 4,54,853 goods and services.

Government e-Marketplace (GeM), which was developed in a world-record five months, makes it easier for different government departments, organizations, and PSUs to purchase common goods and services online. GeM seeks to increase the speed, efficiency, and openness of public procurement. To help government users get the most for their money, it offers e-bidding, reverse e-auction, and demand aggregation technologies.

GeM is a completely paperless, cashless, and system-driven e-marketplace that allows for the purchase of everyday goods and services with minimal human interaction. To a large extent, GeM eliminates human interaction in vendor registration, order placement, and payment processing. GeM, as an open platform, has no entrance hurdles for legitimate suppliers who want to conduct business with the government. At each stage, SMS and e-mail notifications are delivered to both the buyer and his/her head of the organization, as well as the paying authorities and vendors. The GeM portal’s transparency, efficiency, and convenience of use have resulted in significant price reductions on GeM as compared to tender, Rate Contracts, and direct purchase rates.
